Necessity is the mother of invention

Back in 2011, we were the founders of Adcloud, processing 10k+ transactions per second and going head-to-head with Google. To keep up, we did something that raised eyebrows at the time — we went all-in on microservices. When existing PaaS solutions couldn’t handle our scaling needs, we built our own infrastructure. Plot twist: managing it ate up ⅓ of our engineering time. Not exactly ideal when you’re trying to run an ad exchange.

The lightbulb moment

If we were wrestling with this infrastructure beast, other companies must be too. So in 2014, we created Giant Swarm — the comprehensive solution we wished we’d had. We took all our battle scars from building and running infrastructure at scale and turned them into something that lets developers actually focus on, you know, developing.
